The earliest among the renowned Slovenians to live in this area, is certainly the great mathematician, strategist and artillery expert Baron Jurij Vega (1754-1802), who called Zagorica home. He taught mathematics at the Artillery School in Vienna and even wrote textbooks. He later worked on his logarithm tables, which were in print in America and Russia up to 1971. His birth house and the Church of the Holy Cross were destroyed during a fire in 1944. The present house has hosted the memorial room and permanent exhibition since 1976. To honour his worldwide renown, the newly-founded Municipality of Dol pri Ljubljani decided to choose 23 March, his birthday, for their municipal festival.
