Villages with picturesque names are scattered along the slopes and at the foot of the hills. The entire municipality is made up of 19 villages. Being profuse in many water courses, the area has been inhabited since ancient times; an example proving this point is the famous Roman Road connecting Vrhnika and Celje that is believed to have run past Dol. By the end of the last century, the River Sava ran closer to the villages, which explains why piers for boats and rafts used to be here.

The most prominent handicraft in the municipality is and has always been the weaving of straw into braids to make hats, sold to customers from near and far. Today, the craft is a simple hobby for some, the most renowned craftsman being Antonija Jemec. Her clever and nimble fingers conjure up beautiful practical and decorative items.

One of Jemec's pieces - a giant linden leaf embellished with a plaited rosary consisting of 118 miniature baskets - was given to Pope John Paul II during her visit to the Vatican. Straw weaving was a secondary and, in some cases,  the primary activity in many homes. It is no surprise, then, that the newly founded municipality leaders listened to the suggestions of its residents to incorporate the woven braid into its municipal coat of arms.

The Dol pri Ljubljana Municipal Festival is held on 23 March, the birthday of the great mathematician, strategist and artillery expert Baron Jurij Vega (1754-1802), who was born in Zagorica.
